Early in my studies at Brigham Young University in the Design program we were tasked to illustrate a singular random adjective that we drew out of a hat.
My word was LOVE.
This sketch was born out of my efforts to fulfill that assignment with integrity and sincerity. For, as a Christian, I can imagine no greater love than to portray our Savior's relationship with us.
The reference photos were shot with my old-school Nikon film camera and then I developed them myself in a darkroom. Am I dating myself here?
The model is my sister and the hands are my father's. They were rarely home at the same time, so I ended up shooting my dad hugging a stuffed bear.
The drawing is on rice paper, which gave it a softer edged, more etherial aspect. The lower hand portrays strength and stability as it supports the figure. The upper hand shows sensitivity in its "soothing a fevered brow" gesture. It is inspiring to me that the recorded ministry of the Savior reveals what seems to be a perfect balance of mercy and justice and strength and sensitivity.
I've come to think of this image as my ambassador for my convictions concerning Christ.
