Artist Statement

The Savior instructed the ruler Nicodemus on the true nature of His Messianic role when He declared, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved."

I enjoy the opportunity to reflect on the miracle of the condescension of our Savior. And on the unique courage of the many individuals in His life that valiantly stepped into their special roles in the history of humanity.

Mother Mary's voice resonates through the ages to us, "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior...for He that is mighty hath done unto me great things; and holy is His name."

I wanted to make my painting of Mary a fresh version of the traditional madonna and child iconography. The blue we associate with her is connected to the intense shades derived from the expensive lapis lazuli semi precious stones that were ground and used as paint historically. My version retains this tradition and adds a subtle Persian pattern in the background, as well as inferring the important embroidery and modest, layered clothing associated with ancient Judea.
