Artist Statement

A little girl nestles in the folds of a quilt, imitating her mother’s movements and enjoying the warmth of the hearth. The triangular “flying geese” design serves to move our eyes toward the child and then up to the mother figure. Quilts and textiles were serious investments in the 19th century, so the mother is keeping it in good repair. The clothing and other elements place this image in the 1840’s.
