Artist Statement

 A trip to Jerusalem inspired this painting of Mary. These olive trees were endlessly enchanting to me. I found myself photographing them more than anything else. The family I traveled with started to tease me, "Hold up everyone! Lynde has found yet another olive tree!" They are so ancient and muscular. They look like they are striving to thrive out of a dusty and mostly barren ground out of shear force of will. What a metaphor for life!

I bought the dress the model is wearing from a shop in the Old City. The embroidery is fascinating and resonates well with the raised, decorative border I stenciled on the “frame."

When I was “heavy with child” while expecting my twins I found myself thinking constantly of Mary and her unique role in history. She inspires me with her courage, loyalty and gentle but strong nature.
